Taken in January 1924, this glass negative shows Mrs. Dean Acheson, wife of the Washington lawyer who later served as Secretary of State under Harry Truman. It came from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that produced many portraits of officials and public figures in the early twentieth century. The title's year was corrected from 1923 to 1924 on the negative, a reminder that captions were sometimes written in haste. Streaks and blemishes across the plate reflect the natural decay of its original coating, common to glass negatives of this age.
