Rather than a photograph of Woodrow Wilson himself, this glass negative appears to record a painted portrait of the former president, copied photographically around 1923, a year before his death in 1924. Wilson, who led the country through World War I and championed the League of Nations, remained a frequent subject for artists after he left office in 1921. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio active in the early twentieth century, photographed officials, events and artwork for reproduction. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from deterioration in the original coatings, and they are worth noting when examining the plate.
