Arcades are the signature feature of Havana's older streets, and this print turns attention to them as much as to any single building. Its title, "Habana," is taken from the mount, and the record dates the image to around 1964, with the question mark signaling that the year is an estimate. Arcaded walkways, or portales, line many colonial and early twentieth-century blocks in the city, sheltering pedestrians from sun and rain while shaping the rhythm of the street. Photographs from the 1960s like this one capture a city whose architecture was built across centuries and was still in daily use.
