Remains of the battleship lie in Havana harbor in this view, the twisted hull that marked the spot where USS *Maine* sank after an explosion on February 15, 1898. The blast killed more than 250 of the crew, and its cause was never settled to everyone's satisfaction, but the public outcry over it helped push the United States into the Spanish-American War that spring. The Detroit Publishing Company issued this image as a photochrom, a color process that built up the hues from several printing stones, so the tones look painted rather than photographed.
