The title promises an "instantaneous view," and this stereograph, numbered 90 and dated July 11, 1860, was made to capture a busy Havana thoroughfare in a fraction of a second. The Calzada del Monte was a broad road leading south from the city toward the suburb of Jesús del Monte, where wealthy residents kept country houses and gardens. The card carries E. Anthony's 1860 copyright, and its quick exposure reflects how photographers were then shortening exposure times to record moving carriages and pedestrians. Seen through a stereoscope, the paired images would have given viewers a sense of depth along this street.
