A shop sign reading "Bazar Ingles" hangs at the center of this view of a Havana street, a small detail that hints at the mix of Spanish and English trade in the city around 1900. The color comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss method that the Detroit Photographic Company adopted in the United States. It printed several layers from stone plates to give photographs a painted look, which made it popular for tourist views. Havana was then under United States military administration after the Spanish-American War, when American visitors and merchants were becoming a visible presence on its commercial streets. The print comes from an album the company kept in its office as a reference catalog.
