Few things announce a season as directly as a poster, and this 1946 color lithograph advertises Havana's Carnival, which its title places in February and March of that year. The sheet is credited to Caravia and belongs to the commercial poster tradition that filled Cuban streets and storefronts to draw crowds to the festivities. Havana's Carnival was then a major annual event, built around street parades, music and dance groups, and costumed revelers along the city's avenues. Its bright, flat color and bold lettering show how lithography was used to sell public entertainment in the decade, which makes the piece useful evidence of how the celebration was promoted.
