Few posters from the 1930s put a dance at the center of a city's festival the way this one does: its title promotes a "Rumba" alongside the February fiestas in Havana, which ran from January 30 to February 28, 1937. Enrique Caravia designed the color lithograph, which the Cia. Litografica de la Habana printed in Havana. Rumba, an Afro-Cuban dance and music tradition, had become a symbol of the island's popular culture by the 1930s, and the city's carnival season was a major public celebration. The poster shows how commercial printing helped turn that street culture into an advertised attraction.
