Drums are the focus of this 1952 color lithograph, which advertises Havana's Carnival season from February 23 to March 23. The poster's imagery of percussion reflects the central role of Afro-Cuban drumming in the city's street celebrations, when neighborhood comparsas, or dance troupes, paraded through the streets with music and costume. The printed dates also place the festival in a tense year: the carnival period overlapped with the military coup led by Fulgencio Batista in March 1952. Posters like this one were a common way to promote such events, and they now document both the visual style of Cuban commercial printing and the popular culture of the period.
