The title names the Parque de Isabel II in Havana, and the statue of Queen Isabella II of Spain (1830-1904) at its center. Isabella reigned from 1833 until she was deposed in 1868, so a monument to her in a Havana square reflects Spanish colonial authority over Cuba during her reign. The park was renamed after the Spanish monarchy's control of the island ended, and the photograph records the square as it looked in the decades before that change. The caption credits the firm of C.D. Fredricks & Daries, whose views of Cuban streets and public spaces were popular with travelers and collectors.
