Matanzas, a port city on Cuba's northern coast about 100 kilometers east of Havana, is the focus here, with its waterways and harbor filling the foreground. The record dates the print to sometime between 1900 and 1940, a stretch when Cuban ports handled a steady flow of sugar, molasses and other exports bound for American and European markets. Matanzas was known in that era as the "City of Bridges" because several rivers cut through it, and boats moving along those channels were a common sight. The photograph's emphasis on the water and the vessels suggests a document of the port's working life rather than a formal portrait of the town.
