This print is one of the few in the set that names a specific building type in Havana, a casino, and its catalog number (No. 355) marks it as part of the Pan American Union's photographic holdings. In Cuba the word often referred to a private members' social club, where families gathered for dinners, dances, and card games, though it could also mean a gambling hall. The record dates the print to about 1937, when Havana was a busy destination for American tourists and its public buildings mixed Spanish colonial roots with newer styles. The Pan American Union gathered images like this to show the cities of the Americas to a wider public.
