Muybridge's cantering horse belongs to the series he made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, when a row of cameras fired in quick succession as a horse passed a tripwire. This print comes from the 1881 book The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, where it appears among the numbered plates showing the consecutive positions of a horse in a gait. The sequence was staged to settle a debate over whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a gallop, and the frames show the rider's and horse's poses frame by frame. Its place in the history of motion pictures comes from exactly this kind of breakdown of movement into separate images.
