Eadweard Muybridge's sequence of horses in motion was made at his Palo Alto, California, property in 1878 and 1879, using a row of cameras with trip wires that photographed the animal as it passed. This print, titled "Horses. Cantering," comes from The Attitudes of Animals in Motion, a book Muybridge published in 1881 that gathered the series into numbered plates. The images settled a long-running argument over whether all four of a galloping horse's hooves ever left the ground at once, and they showed the cantering gait as a sequence of distinct positions. Muybridge's work also laid groundwork for the moving pictures that would follow, which is why the print appears in a gallery on film history.
