Muybridge's cantering horse is one of the sequence photographs made at Leland Stanford's Palo Alto property in 1878 and 1879, when Stanford hired him to settle whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground. The print was later published in *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, a book of consecutive frames showing the stages of a gait, and it is copyrighted under Muybridge's name. Set against the still pictures of its day, the series shows how a camera could freeze motion too quick for the eye to follow.
