Plate 17 in Eadweard Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows a horse at a canter, one stage in a sequence that splits a stride into separate moments. The series was made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, where Leland Stanford wanted to settle whether a running horse ever had all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge set a line of cameras along a track, each triggered as the horse passed, so the shutters caught the motion in fractions of a second. The frozen positions influenced how artists and scientists understood animal movement.
