Plate 15 in Muybridge's *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows a horse at a canter, one of the sequence photographs made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. The series grew out of a question that Leland Stanford, a former governor and horse breeder, put to Muybridge: whether a galloping horse ever has all four hooves off the ground at once. Muybridge answered it with a row of cameras whose shutters were tripped by threads stretched across the track, so each frame caught a split-second stage of the stride. This albumen print, copyrighted in 1881, remains a landmark of early motion study and a forerunner of motion pictures.
