Plate 16 in Edward Muybridge's 1881 book *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion* shows a horse at a canter, one of the sequences he made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879. The project began with a question from Leland Stanford, a former California governor and horse breeder, about whether all four hooves leave the ground during a gallop. Muybridge answered it with a row of cameras fired by tripwires along a track, and the series became a landmark in the study of motion and a precursor to motion pictures.
