Muybridge's cantering horse is one of the sequence studies he made at Palo Alto, California, in 1878 and 1879, when former Governor Leland Stanford hired him to settle a question that had divided horsemen for years: whether all four hooves leave the ground at once during a gallop. Published in 1881 as part of *The Attitudes of Animals in Motion*, the image is numbered 18 in the book's index of illustrations. Muybridge's series of cameras, triggered by tripwires, captured the stride in fractions of a second, and these albumen prints helped lay the groundwork for the motion pictures that followed.
