Mounted on a stereo card and meant for viewing through a stereoscope, this image shows the White House as it appeared to visitors in the decades after the Civil War. The record gives the dates 1868 and 1893, suggesting the view was made or issued across those years, as many stereographs were reprinted over time. The name W.W. Lytle appears on the back, a reminder that individual makers and sellers often put their names on these cards. Two slightly offset photographs fused into one picture gave the executive mansion a sense of depth that a flat print could not.
