Petworth, a residential neighborhood in northwest Washington, is the place named in this glass negative, which shows schools and portable classroom buildings. Portable classrooms were a common stopgap in growing American cities after the First World War, when enrollments rose faster than permanent buildings could be constructed. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital's streets and public buildings in the early twentieth century, made the image. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French, and streaks and blemishes on the glass reflect the gradual breakdown of its original coating.
