Petworth, a neighborhood in Northwest Washington, is the place named in this view, which pairs the school buildings with the temporary classrooms known as portables. Such add-on structures were a common response to crowding in the city's schools around the end of the First World War, when population growth outpaced new construction. The picture comes from the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented Washington's streets, buildings and institutions in the early twentieth century, and it offers a useful look at how growing neighborhoods were served by their schools.
