Scappoose, Oregon, sat in the lower Columbia County farmland about 25 miles northwest of Portland in 1929, and its economy rested on the forest and the fields. Logging and sawmilling supplied much of the local payroll, while dairy herds and small grain and vegetable farms worked the flat, diked bottomlands along the Multnomah Channel and Scappoose Bay. Portland was the nearest large market, and farmers and loggers reached it by road and river. Residents in 1929 knew the town as a quiet farming and mill community, not yet a commuter suburb. Within months, the stock market crash of October 1929 would spread hard times to rural Oregon, and the prosperity visible in a town like this one would soon give way to lean years.
