The hand-colored sixth-plate daguerreotype shows an unidentified woman and a girl seated and facing the camera, with their faces softened by pigment added after the silver image was made. The oval opening sits in a case decorated with scrolls, and the brass mat is stamped "F. Grice," a maker's mark that helps place the object around 1855. Daguerreotypes of this era were small keepsakes meant to be held and kept in cases, and hand coloring was a popular way to add warmth to the otherwise monochrome silver surface.
