Psi Upsilon, one of the older national fraternities, had a chapter at the University of Pennsylvania, and this view from about 1908 shows its Philadelphia clubhouse at a time when fraternity houses were becoming a visible part of college life. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for large-format views of American cities, towns and scenic sites that were sold to travelers and readers in the early twentieth century. Images like this one record the building as a social center for its members, along with the architecture and streetscape of a university neighborhood that has changed considerably since.
