Standing before Independence Hall, this statue honors John Barry, the Irish-born sea captain who commanded some of the Continental Navy's most successful ships and is often called the father of the American Navy. The photograph dates to about 1908, not long after the monument was placed, and it shows how the figure stood in the open ground beside the historic State House. The image is a glass plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold photographic views of American towns and landmarks in the early twentieth century, and it preserves a clear record of the square at that time.
