Chamounix Lake sits within Fairmount Park, the large municipal park system that Philadelphia began assembling in 1867 along the Schuylkill River. The name recalls the Chamonix valley in the French Alps, a nod that fits the romantic landscaping popular with 19th-century estate owners and park designers. This view is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1900 and 1910 produced many scenic views of American cities, parks, and tourist sites. Its survival as a large 8 by 10 inch negative reflects the era's preference for detailed, high-quality images of public landscapes.
