Titled *Saving a life*, this glass negative records a rescue by rowboat at Coney Island, New York, where small boats were a common sight along the crowded summer beaches. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of American places as postcards and booklets, made the image sometime between 1900 and 1905, when the resort was drawing large crowds and lifesaving was becoming an organized public concern. The company's dramatic, instructive subjects like this one were popular with buyers at the time. The negative was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
