This 1936 silkscreen poster stands out for its blunt list of consequences: blindness, arthritis, invalidism and misery, all tied to untreated gonorrhea. It was produced under the Work Projects Administration and sponsored by the Staten Island Case Finding Project, reflecting the 1930s public health push to bring venereal disease out of silence and into clinics. Before antibiotics, gonorrhea could cause eye damage in newborns and joint inflammation in adults, so the warning rested on the medicine of the day. A June 28, 1939 date stamp on the back shows the poster was still being recorded three years after it was printed.
