The caption names two men, J.C. Leavitt and J.C. Strauss, both tied to St. Louis, though the Bain News Service recorded that title from unverified data, so their identities and the reason for the picture are not confirmed. The negative dates to 1904, the year St. Louis hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, when the city drew visitors and press from across the country. George Grantham Bain ran a New York news photo service, and his glass negatives preserve everyday reporting from that era, so this small record offers a glimpse of the people photographed in the city during the fair year.
