Catcher Roger Bresnahan appears here during his years with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he served as a player and manager in the early 1910s. Born in Toronto, he was nicknamed the "Duke of Tralee" and is widely credited with popularizing shin guards for catchers. The glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency whose photographs documented sports and news of the period. Bain's pictures show how ballplayers were posed and presented to the public before sports photography became commonplace in newspapers.
