George Stovall is the subject here, a first baseman shown in the uniform of the St. Louis American League club, which was then known as the Browns. Stovall played for that team in the early 1910s, and the glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a New York news photography operation that supplied pictures of sports and current events to newspapers. Bain's sports photographs were often made quickly for same-week publication, so portraits like this one record how players were presented to a fast-growing mass audience of baseball fans. The title and date were assigned later by researchers at the Society for American Baseball Research, so the 1912 date reflects their work rather than a written note on the plate.
