Miller Huggins is shown here in his St. Louis National League uniform, a detail that places him in the years before he became one of the best-known managers in baseball. Huggins played second base for the Cardinals in the early 1910s, and the Bain News Service, a Manhattan-based wire photo agency, took many portraits of ballplayers for newspapers that were hungry for images of the sport. This glass negative was made around 1912, when the Cardinals were a struggling club and Huggins was better known as a sharp-fielding infielder than as a manager. Later he led the New York Yankees to multiple pennants, which gives this early portrait its interest for anyone tracing his career.
