Start of 'million population'" is the title Bain News Service gave this 1910 glass negative, though the caption data behind it is unverified, so the exact scene is open to question. The phrase points to St. Louis's civic drive of the period, when boosters hoped to see the city pass a million residents. The 1910 census counted about 687,000, showing the goal was still out of reach. Bain's staff photographed many such moments of civic promotion, so the picture offers a glimpse of how the city presented itself at the time.
