In January 1919, Burkburnett was still a town that carried the name of cattleman Burk Burnett, whose ranching interests dominated the land before the oil discoveries of 1918. The Armistice had been signed only two months earlier, and the sudden end of wartime demand left many oilfield workers and merchants uncertain whether the boom would last. Residents also lived through the influenza epidemic that swept through Texas that fall, which closed schools and crowded local doctors. To most people in the region, the town was becoming known as a raw, fast-changing oil camp where the old cattle country was giving way to derricks and pipelines.
