Burkburnett in 1919 was still a town measuring itself against the cattle and farming economy that had long defined Wichita County, even as oil remade its streets. Families arrived from farms across Texas and neighboring Oklahoma, competing for lots, lumber, and wages in a market that rose with each new well. Churches and schools built for a modest population now stood among derricks and freight wagons, and many residents wondered whether the boom would last. Returning veterans from the recent war joined the crowds seeking work, and the town's future seemed to hinge on whether the oil would keep flowing.
