Burkburnett, in Wichita County in north Texas, was a small farming town until oil was struck nearby in 1918, and by January 1919 the boom had remade it. Drillers, teamsters, merchants, and speculators poured in faster than housing and streets could keep up, and many newcomers lived in tents and makeshift shacks while derricks rose across the surrounding fields. The town sat close to Wichita Falls, which served as the supply and rail center for the new field, so the two communities grew tied together. A panoramic view from early 1919 would have shown a town still in the middle of that rush, where people knew the place mainly as an oil camp at the edge of the Texas plains.
