A Russian playwright's rural drama reached Los Angeles audiences in this 1936 silkscreen poster for Anton Chekhov's *Uncle Vanya*, sponsored by the Federal theater Project. The Project was a New Deal program that employed out-of-work actors, designers and stagehands during the Depression, and its productions often drew people who rarely bought theater tickets. Chekhov, who died in 1904, wrote the play about the frustrated lives of a country estate's residents, and the Project's willingness to stage European classics was part of its broader mission. The flat, bold color is typical of the silkscreen method the WPA poster units used to produce eye-catching notices in quantity.
