Lettered in bold silkscreen color, this 1936 poster promotes a San Bernardino production of *The Cat and the Canary*, a comedy-thriller by John Willard first staged in 1922. Its story of a family gathered in a remote mansion for a reading of a will made it a favorite of amateur and professional companies for decades. The Federal theater Project, a division of the Works Progress Administration, employed out-of-work actors, directors and designers during the Depression, and its local units relied on silkscreen to produce inexpensive, eye-catching posters like this one.
