Tucked into the grounds of the Braeme House in Clinton, Louisiana, this wellhouse was recorded by Alvyk Boyd Cruise in a watercolor made between 1935 and 1939. The Historic American Buildings Survey, a New Deal program launched in 1933, hired artists and draftsmen to document older American buildings and their outbuildings. Renderings like this one show materials, proportions and construction details clearly. Well houses sheltered a household's water supply, so the drawing preserves a working part of domestic life that is often overlooked.
