A watercolor of the porticoes on Lawyers Row in Clinton, the seat of East Feliciana Parish in north-central Louisiana, sets this sheet apart from the building photographs and measured drawings that usually document a site. Alvyk Boyd Cruise painted it between 1935 and 1939 as part of the Historic American Buildings Survey, a New Deal program that employed architects and draftsmen to record older American buildings during the Depression. The row's small law offices, with their columns and roof lines, reflect the Greek Revival style that spread through the Louisiana parishes in the 19th century. The painting shows how these modest porches were built and how they fit together along the street.
