Cruise's watercolor focuses on the entrance of the Archbishopric in New Orleans and the balcony above it, a detail that stands out among the city's many wrought-iron galleries. The painting dates from between 1935 and 1939, when the Historic American Buildings Survey was documenting older American architecture through measured drawings, photographs and watercolors. Such records were meant to preserve buildings that might be altered or lost, and this one captures the French Quarter's blend of Creole and Anglo-American building traditions. The painter's attention to the doorway and balcony shows how a religious building's entrance could still feel domestic and rooted in the street.
