Alvyk Boyd Cruise's watercolor shows the portico and balcony of the courthouse in Clinton, the seat of East Feliciana Parish, where the upper gallery and columns give the building its public face. Cruise made the drawing between 1935 and 1939 for the Historic American Buildings Survey, a New Deal program that employed artists, draftsmen and photographers to record older American buildings. The sheet is catalogued as part of the survey's Louisiana series, so it documents the courthouse's design during the Depression years, when many older public buildings were still in daily use.
