The cupola on this watercolor is octagonal and rises above a roofline of dormer windows, the features that distinguish the Girod House from the flat-roofed brick and stucco buildings around it in the French Quarter of New Orleans. The house was built in the early 1800s for Nicolas Girod, a mayor of the city, and is better known today as the Napoleon House. Alvyk Boyd Cruise painted the view between 1935 and 1939 as part of the Historic American Buildings Survey, a New Deal program that recorded older American buildings in drawings and photographs. Its careful rendering of the roof and its ornamental details makes it a useful record of how the building looked during the Depression years.
