Laundry strung across the railing of the Galley House balcony gives this watercolor its domestic character, a detail that architectural records seldom show. Alvyk Boyd Cruise painted it for the Historic American Buildings Survey, a New Deal program begun in 1933 to document significant American buildings through drawings and photographs. Survey artists and draftsmen recorded the ironwork, galleries and courtyards that define older New Orleans neighborhoods, and their sheets remain a valuable record of how those houses were built and used.
