A pencil sketch dated March 15, 1863, places the viewer at Potomac Creek, Virginia, where the Union army maintained a supply depot and camps near Fredericksburg. Its caption, "On picket: Officers' quarters in log house," points to a small outpost where officers lived in a log building while their men stood guard nearby. The initials "EF" likely belong to Edwin Forbes, an artist who recorded army camp life in the field during the war. Sketches like this were often drawn on the spot, so they capture the rough, everyday texture of winter encampments that later painted or printed images often smoothed over.
