The title on this carte de visite, "Freedmen's quarters," names a kind of housing that emerged after emancipation, when formerly enslaved African Americans needed homes of their own. The card was made in New Berne, North Carolina, by J.D. Heywood's photographic rooms, a local studio. New Berne had been under Union control since 1862, and in the years that followed, many freed people there and across the region sought housing, work and land. Cartes de visite were small, inexpensive mounted prints popular in the 1870s and 1880s. The catalog dates this one only loosely, so the exact year is uncertain, but the card still documents a community's postwar living conditions.
