A sutler's tent pitched in a Union army camp at Falmouth, Virginia, is the subject of this pencil drawing, dated 1863 and signed only with the initials E.F. Falmouth sits across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg and served as a major staging area for the Army of the Potomac that year. Sutlers were civilian merchants licensed to sell food, tobacco, writing paper and other goods to soldiers, so their tents were busy meeting points in camp life. The drawing offers a close look at a commercial space that soldiers depended on between drills and campaigns.
