This pencil drawing, dated May 20, 1863, shows a soldier's hut near Falmouth, Virginia, a rare view of the shelter a common soldier lived in. The sketch is signed only with the initials E.F., and the record does not identify its maker. Falmouth sits across the Rappahannock River from Fredericksburg and had served as a large Army of the Potomac camp through the winter and early spring of 1863, until the army marched toward Chancellorsville in late April. Its rough timber walls and simple roof show how Union troops made their own quarters from whatever materials were at hand.
