Titled "Borrowing a chimney," this pencil drawing shows a makeshift winter scene at Rappahannock Station in Virginia, dated January 13, 1864. Union troops camped along the Rappahannock through the cold months of 1863 and 1864, and many built small log huts with stick-and-mud chimneys, so the title hints at the improvising needed to stay warm. Artists who followed the army often sent sketches like this to illustrated newspapers, giving readers at home a glimpse of camp life. The drawing came to the Library of Congress as a gift and preserves a domestic side of the war that battle scenes rarely show.
